How can freelance artists market their work?

Portfolios are an important marketing tool; a common mistake most artists make is not paying enough attention to their portfolio. In today’s competitive world it is vital for artists to showcase their talent in a manner that is effective and does not take up too much time. No matter how big or small the artist, critics and admirers alike prefer looking at an artist’s portfolio first and then discussing his/her works later. If you are an artist and want to make sure your art is marketed in the best manner possible then the first step is to make an impressive portfolio.
Before you start working on your portfolio, the first thing you should do is get organised. Carefully put together all the photographs you want to display in your portfolio. If you have an artwork that you feel should be in your portfolio, get a professional photographer to photograph your artwork. Don’t try and pass of cheap digital camera shots in your portfolio. Every single photograph in your portfolio has to be professional looking and a true representation of your artwork. Remember, the first step in making a successful portfolio is getting organized and making sure that your best work is properly photographed.
Although there is no set rule as to how many photographs you can display in your portfolio, it is always a good idea to limit the number of photographs to less then 20. If you showcase more than 20 works, chances are your best work might not get the attention it deserves. Also, if you are not sure which of your works should be in the portfolio and which ones should be omitted get critical inputs from fellow artist or friends. Sometimes it becomes difficult for an artist to differentiate between his own works. Remember, the idea is to showcase your best work in a professional manner.
All your photographs should be numbered, dated and labelled so that you know exactly which artwork is being discussed when you get a call from the art gallery. Imagine trying to discuss an artwork if the art gallery keeps telling you that they are interested in the ‘big blue painting’, it would be simpler to just tell you that they are interested in ‘Photo 20A’. If you have not yet decided on a title for your artwork do so on a priority basis. In fact, it is essential to give titles to all your works. It is a good idea to write a brief note on each work in your portfolio; it helps potential buyers and art galleries gain valuable insight into how you interpret your own artwork.
In conclusion, your portfolio is not just a collection of your finest works; it is a valuable marketing tool. If you are not confident you can put together your own portfolio or you want to ensure that your portfolio is marketed in the best possible manner, it is always a good idea to get professional help. There is not harm in spending a little extra to get the job done efficiently and professionally.
